Can you outsource the Playboy bunny?
The name Playboy is synonymous with America and what most men think are the good things in life. It is obvious to think of all the ladies that appear in the magazine but there are numerous sporting, music and car articles that pepper the magazine. All of these elements help to make it an essential read and guarantee the magazine and indeed company is thriving to this day. Hugh Hefner may be getting on in years but he still has all his business skills as the company has moved with the times successfully. And yes, of course the women of Playboy are more important than all the other elements put together.
Except from the business acumen of the company and the way that it has remained relevant is a testimony to a great product and great leadership. When videos and then DVDs came on the scene, Playboy did not wait behind; they pushed on and embraced these new markets. The exact same can be said for the way they reacted when the internet came to prominence and the company has a huge presence online. The merchandising available with the company’s brand and logo are also hugely successful and can be seen everywhere. All of these elements have helped keep Playboy at the top of the world.
However, the company is now looking at another modern phenomena and that is outsourcing. Unless you have been living under a rock on Mars in recent years, you will know all about outsourcing and the benefits it can bring to a company. Being able to obtain the same level of quality and service for a much cheaper price is of huge benefit to any organization, even one as big as Playboy. This is why the company is seriously considering the outsourcing of their publication processes to American Media Inc. This move is a purely cost-cutting move but the company has been privately admitting this anyway.
Taking away all the production and marketing elements of the process will allow Playboy to place a focus on what the company does best. Provide the sort of content that readers and viewers all over the world want to see. This means focusing on the girls and the articles and making this the key element of the work done by the main Playboy body. The cost savings of this method will be of great benefit but it should provide the company with some breathing space to improve matters.
There have been rumors circulating that Hugh Hefner and the company were looking to sell up and this outsourcing move could be a stop off along the way. If it returns life and vitality to the company, then it is a win-win situation. If there is renewed optimism for working the magazine again, it should be back in profit and a fresh start could be enabled.
If however, this move does not return the fortunes to previous times, it could be that all the avenues have been explored and the Playboy name is sold on, allowing Heff to retire alongside his bunnies.
