Outsourcing get on your bike.
In this day and age, it is perhaps not great news to see a firm so heavily linked with nuclear arms to be doing well. Given that this is exactly the issue that leaves some countries eyeing each other nervously whilst stockpiling a little something in reserve, is it any wonder that most right minded people in the world shift a little uncomfortably in their seat nuclear power rears its ugly head? This is not the only reason that Serco has made money and been in the news recently, the company also runs the London Docklands Light Railway system, as well as Britain’s nuclear arms but they have really cleaned up thanks to the Government move to outsourcing.
Outsourcing was seen as the solution for many firms looking to reduce their labor costs without compromising the quality of the service but the success has not gone unnoticed. This means that many governmental bodies and departments have realized that they too can improve their financial situation by outsourcing a great number of their services which has opened the door for private firms to clean up and make a good chunk of money. The public will moan but then again, they would moan if the Government body weren’t chasing the most effective and efficient option for their money so it is hard to see if they would be pleased with any option. Quite often, a council department is damned if they do and damned if they don’t, which is exactly the situation they face when they consider outsourcing. This is why so many of them are now deciding it is worth their while to outsource, ignore the public furore and make plans with what to do with the money they saved.
Serco managed to deliver half year pre-tax profits of around £80m, a rise of over 30 per cent, which when you consider the current economic climate, is not bad going. There can’t be too many firms or industries experiencing this sort of result, so whilst it is only right to doff your cap to the firm for managing this, it should further underline the importance that outsourcing can have for firms. Yes, the usual focus falls upon the firm who is outsourcing their work but just think what this trend means to the firms who are providing the outsourced supply of work. With so many companies and government bodies reading that this is a golden opportunity, it remains to be seen how many more try to jump on board the outsourcing bandwagon.
Serco have managed to capture a whole host of outsourcing contracts with the current London Mayor, Boris Johnson, handing out a lot of deals. One of the more interesting and potentially lucrative contracts that Serco have obtained is the contract for the London cycle scheme. There are obviously environmental reasons for this sort of deal to be a major success and if it is given the proper push, there is no doubt that this could see a lot more money flow towards Serco in the near future.
Size doesnt matter in IT outsourcing
There is a very popular saying that it is best not to sweat the small stuff, and it is all small stuff. This is a good way for people to think about things in perspective and not to get too worked up over a lot of things in life which they would have no control over anyway. In business though, this is not so easy for people to do and failing to look after the little things can lead to a great number of difficulties for firms and businesses. For small firms, it can be extremely difficult, particularly if their core skills focus on a certain task or skill but there needs to be the ability to look after everything.
One good example of this situation would revolve around a firm’s IT capabilities and the need to stay on top of things. If a small firm sets up, they may not have the personnel or capabilities to ensure they are running smoothly but it may not seem like a major problem to them if they don’t. If they stay small that may be okay but if they start to grow and develop (which all firms would hope to do), they may soon find they are out of their depths. Of course, the problem is if it gets to this stage, the firm may have created a number of problems and difficulties in their IT work which may make it more difficult to enlist the help of an expert. Failing that, it may make it more expensive to employ an expert to fix it, which may mean that a small firm finds it is out with their budget to fix any IT issue that comes along. This is why it may make perfect sense for them to utilize an outsourcing service as quickly as possible.
There are now outsourcing firms who are offering capable and competent services for firms of any size, including self employed firms. It may not seem like a self employed worker will need much assistance when it comes to IT issues but email and internet links are vitally important to any business, even more so if a large proportion of their business comes from internet based sales or correspondence. Being out of contact for even a few days can be catastrophic for a firm, which makes the price they pay for expert help may be well worth it and will prove to be extremely cost effective in the long run.
Although the bigger firms will be able to deal with the market leaders and larger IT specialists, this does not mean that there will not be a potential supplier available for small firms. The outsourcing market is extremely competitive, especially in the IT industry, which means that there will be suppliers of all sizes. Many firms are happy, and indeed prefer, to work with firms of a small nature as it applies the, to be more hands on and can build a good working relationship together. Regardless of your size, there will be an outsourcing solution for all your IT needs.
BP and IBM team up in an outsourcing partnership
When it comes to firms that are big in size and stature, IBM and BP are amongst the biggest. The fact that they are known by these initials as opposed to a whole word being spelled out would indicate the fact that they are so well known. It may seem strange to think that two companies of this size and stature are going to be working together on an outsourcing project but when you consider it, it’s a fantastic move. Working alongside a firm of a similar size or stature should offer the type of confidence that a big firm really needs and this should make it a simpler and easier affair to organize. There are obviously going to be some difficulties with two major firms working together, ego and power may come into play but at least there will be a belief and acceptance that both have the expertise to work together on such a major project.
The main factor behind BP’s remit for work from firms is to simplify their business processes and of course, lower their cost of labor. Even major firms need to re-evaluate their wage levels and number of employed staff at the moment and outsourcing is a fantastic way of doing so. As IBM has a great level of experience in this area, they should be able to offer many benefits of progressing these areas which should see BP becoming even stronger. Even the firms who are experiencing success at the moment should not rest on their laurels and the current economic slowdown is the perfect opportunity for all firms to re-examine their business areas.
It may be a bit unfortunate for the employees who lose their jobs but with the current climate, every firm appears to be cutting back or laying people off. Therefore, it would be the perfect opportunity for any firm to do the same without drawing particular attention to themselves. This may sound rather callous but in the business world, this is the sort of hard edge that firms need to succeed and BP and IBM know what it takes to stay at the forefront of hard industries.
Another important element of the BP and IBM tie-up will come in the fact that IBM will be responsible for many of the SAP applications and services at BP customer and client sites. The fact that IBM will be required to work closely with the end user places a greater deal of importance on the partnership and again maybe explains why a major firm has been employed to get involved in this project. Whilst there is no reason to believe that a smaller firm would be unable to work successfully in this type of field, it is easy to see why the confidence level of BP would be much higher working with a reputable firm like IBM. This may be concerning for small firms because how can they possibly become a major sized firm if they do not get the opportunities but again, no one said the business world was fair.
Murray bags millions thanks to outsourcing
The start of the new football season always brings fans some excitement and one of the reasons for this is the fact that clubs have new signings and hopes for the year ahead. When a team wins the league, it is usually expected that they will have money to spend but for one champion, the financial status is looking extremely grim. Rangers managed to steal their first title in four years mainly due to their close rivals imploding because of poor management but there will be very few, if any, new signings to help the club defend their title. There have been many reasons for the high levels of debt experienced by Rangers, with lavish spending one of the most popular but the huge levels of outsourcing at the club is another. And it may be a surprise to some but the person who has benefited from this outsourcing tactic has been club owner David Murray.
Murray has stripped many of the assets and business prospects of the club and outsourced to other firms in his business empire, either owned by him or his family members. One of the best examples of this comes in the shape of Azure, who runs the catering services for the club. With over 40,000 fans at every home game, and the club being the only team advertising club strips for sale in sizes up to XXXXXL, there are likely to be many fans who like the odd half-time pie or three at a game. This would see the club making a lot of money each home game but as the catering services have been outsourced to Murray’s company, the profits are taken away from the club.
Traditionally, fans of Glasgow Rangers have never been the smartest football fans, perhaps related to the poor schooling they experience in Scotland but even now some of them are waking up to the fact that David Murray has been milking the club dry for the best part of the decade. The Scottish media have been fully behind the chairman as he led the club on a victorious charge through Scottish football in the 1990s and this has possibly hid some of his worst moments of excess. The club still struggled on the European stage but in an era when Scottish football was in the doldrums, Rangers managed to dominate. They equaled their rival’s Celtic’s achievement of winning nine domestic league titles but there is not much glory in doing something for the second time in history. The club stood on the brink of making history but their bid for 10 in a row was derailed by an ageing team and the re-emergence of a strong Celtic. This meant that for all of Rangers glory years and high spending levels, they failed to equal Celtics success in the European Cup and only equaled their domestic triumphs. And now, the club and its fans are feeling the sharp end of the outsourcing measures that has seen Murray take a vast amount of cash out of the club. The anger and rage of the clubs fans are starting to build and if the clubs are unable to withstand the threat from Celtic who is looking to regain their title, expect to see permarage outside Ibrox throughout the season.
Executives know the benefits of outsourcing
When it comes to taking advice about outsourcing and business activities, it is good business practice to listen to the advice of the market leaders and respected firms. Their experiences may not always be the same as what the smaller firms may have at their disposal but where the major firms and market leaders go first; smaller firms tend to follow on. Therefore, when a well respected firm releases figures and opinions about outsourcing, it is inevitable that many people will listen to them and follow their advice. This is the current situation where Capgemini have announced the findings of a survey they have undertaken with regards to outsourcing in an economic downturn.
The current economic climate is forcing a great number of firms to reconsider all elements of their business and to look towards making savings. One of the places where firms will instinctively turn to in the hope of reducing their labor costs is with outsourcing. The fact remains that outsourcing is extremely important but only if the quality of the service remains high. Sacrificing quality is the one thing that will seriously damage a firm more than labor costs that are a bit too high. Thankfully, there are many great outsourcing firms and options available for firms which should see them get the best of both worlds. This rings true for many industries which is what Capgemini tried to emphasize in their findings.
There are many different areas and departments within a firm but some of the most important include IT, financing, accounting, HR and procurement. All of these are hugely vital for the everyday running of an organization but may not be the most important for the end user. This means there could be the scope for the firm to outsource these options without compromising any of their other services or products. Depending on the needs and how hands-on the outsourcing company has to be, it may well be that offshore outsourcing is a great option for many firms. This may not work for the IT services, particularly if the IT firm is required to fix any problems on site but it can be seen that many of the HR jobs could be completed off site.
A lot of this due to the computer based and automated systems and styles that many firms use for HR. If a firm is growing in size, there may need to be an integrated system to handle all of the requirements for a company. This can be very costly and would also require an expert involved with the set-up of the system. If no one within the company has the expertise for the role, it could become extremely costly to employ one so it makes sense for a firm to look to an outsourcing solution to this problem.
This is why executives are actively promoting the idea of outsourcing to their managers in the hope of reducing labor costs whilst maintain a great level of service. With so many difficulties in the modern business world, any advantage needs to be grasped and this is what outsourcing supplies.
Can outsourcing assist in bankings time of need?
Not too many people are going to have sympathy for those in the baking industry but there are definitely hard times in that industry. Many observers believe that the reckless behavior of banks for the past few years has been the major factor in the current economic downturn and that their happiness to dish out loans to all and sundry has left many people in a bad way financially. This has led to many consumers to believe that whatever happens to bank staff is fair game but it should be remembered that they are people too with families to look after. This means that any consumer which finds it funny to gloat at anyone who loses their job, even if they are in the banking industry is probably a bad person. That said, there are definitely job losses taking place in this industry and there will be a lot more to come too.
Many banks now have to look at their structure and determine where they can make savings to give themselves a better opportunity of staying solvent. In recent years, outsourcing has proved to be a tremendous way for companies to save money and lower their labor costs and this is something that is definitely happening within the banking industry at the moment. There are many areas in which a bank or building society can look to place their work with an external agent without causing any great detriment to the work or service they provide customers.
This is very important because although there is a great need to lower costs and be far more streamlined and efficient, there always needs to be the focus on customer service. With so many banks operating at the moment, there is a lot of competition and if one bank starts to under-perform the rest of the banks operating in the area would be keen to swoop on their customers. Today’s modern consumer has changed and brand loyalty to entities like banks no longer exists. Your parents may have been happy signing with a bank and staying with them for their entire life but that no longer needs to be the case. If a bank provides poor service or lower savings rates or charges higher rates for an overdraft, they are likely to miss out on a great deal of customers. This is where outsourcing is a great opportunity as it can solve both of these problems. Yes, it will help lower the labor cost involved with operating a bank but it should also maintain the high standards that customers demand.
This is because some of the firms who are supplying the outsourcing capabilities are market experts in their respective fields. If they are providing support to a number of banks around the world, they will develop an opportunity to gain experience and become better equipped at dealing with problems and issues that may arise. This is why so many banking firms are looking to a third party agent to assist them with all their banking needs.
The North of Ireland hit by outsourcing problems
Northern Ireland has never had its troubles to seek and during the 1980s, the country experienced huge levels of unemployment, mainly caused by the troubles. The impact of the troubles led to huge unemployment as companies could not continue to trade safely and the nation struggled greatly. The north of Ireland has taken huge steps in recent years to rectify many of the problems and this has been shown in the development of the major cities and the increase in employment opportunities. Belfast is a city transformed and has benefited from an influx on new companies looking to take advantage of the bonuses and benefits offered to them to set up in the city.
Of course, the benefits that were to be had in Belfast were recognized by other countries and cities, which obviously looked to the progress made by the six counties. This has been seen in the advance of the offshore outsourcing around the world and this may be a negative factor in the future of Northern Ireland. This stands apart from the high level of progress made by Northern Ireland with one of the major firms who set up home in the nation was Bombardier. The company makes planes and was a massive employer in the nation and had a great impact on the local economy. The impact that a firm of this size can have on the local economy is huge. Not only do people benefit from having a wage but so many other local firms, not to mention the tax payer benefit to the local council experience an upturn in their fortunes. However, the same can be said in the opposite direction and if a firm decides to move away from a region, there can be difficulty for a great number of people.
In early 2009, Bombardier announced that they would have to make a number of job cuts across the board in order to maintain their financial equilibrium and status. It was announced that almost 1,000 posts at the Shorts facility in Belfast would be shed with over 300 employees being released from their jobs. The remaining posts that would be lost from Short would come from short contracting work, and this can be a huge impact on the local economy. These jobs will be heading to China, as yet another employer heads East to Asia as China looks to move up the chart of outsourcing nations. India is currently the top nation with regards to outsourcing but there is no doubt that China has the potential to take over this position. As the lure and benefits of outsourcing becomes ever more important and vital to a local economy, the battle for outsourcing jobs could become even more intense.
If this turns out to be the case, it is likely that nations such as China will be able to exert a higher level of pressure but the smaller nations could be able to offer lower wages. Depending on what the firm really wants from their outsourcing contract, there is still scope to find the right partner but it may be that the familiar faces take a greater control of the situation.
Coca Cola takes the outsourcing route
Coca Cola is one of the most famous brands in the entire world and any news story surrounding them is of great interest to many people. Like so many top brands, Coca Cola have managed to transcend the fact that they are a drinks manufacturer and have a fan base that is devoted as any sports fan. This can be seen in the merchandise for the company with people wearing t-shirts with the logo splashed over it and have their house full of products. Some people can’t see the company doing any wrong but it is inevitable that they will occasionally receive bad publicity. One of these instances has arisen recently with the news that Coca Cola are looking to outsource an element of their production.
Given the current economic climate, no one wants to lose their job and the local economy could be greatly affected by these outsourcing moves.
The thing that gets most people is the fact that they will believe that Coca Cola will be making more than enough money as it is. For small firms, it is easy to see that outsourcing is extremely important and taking these steps may be the difference between the firm surviving or going to the wall. However, when people consider the size and stature of Coca Cola, they will start to struggle with the concept that they need to improve their financial status. It is important to realize though that companies like Coca Cola didn’t get to their current status by making bad decisions. They know that if they can make improvements to their production facilities or make a further saving, they will do so. This is exactly what is happening in Ireland at warehouse and distribution outlets. If the outsourcing plan goes ahead, areas like Dublin, Cork, Tuam, Tipperary, Waterford and Killarney will be affected by these outsourcing plans.
A total of 130 jobs are likely to be affected and given the current levels of unemployment in Ireland, these figures are not a small matter. Any small economy would miss this level of jobs and again, the fact that it is a company like Coca Cola that is making the layoffs happen makes it more difficult for many people to comprehend. The news has not been well received and this has led to the announcement that current staff are looking to strike in protest against this decision. As always, whenever strike action is mentioned, there is usually a trade union close behind and this is the case in this latest development.
Whether these latest actions will be enough to keep people in a job or will only be enough to earn a better severance package, it is no doubt a very trying time for all concerned. It is not likely that this move to outsourcing is going to affect the sales of Coca Cola around the world but it is fair to say that the drink will be leaving a bad taste in the mouth of those affected by this latest outsourcing decision.
Outsourcing is vital for data inputting
Of all the business activities that a firm can undertake, data entry can be one of the most time consuming but also one of the biggest draws on finite resources. It is imperative that the firm is able to utilize the skills of a staff member who has fast typing skills. However, it does not matter if the person is extremely quick at typing the data, they need to be correct as well. If data is incorrect or can’t be relied upon, it is useless and this is why it is a huge drain on resources. Traditionally, many firms have turned to temping agencies to supply them with staff members who have a known pedigree and track record in data entry but even this method has been usurped by outsourcing capabilities. Yes, if data inputting is becoming a drain on your firm, it may be time to consider the benefits that outsourcing can bring to enable you to gain the benefits.
Outsourcing has become an extremely popular method for a business to reduce its labor costs without compromising its quality levels.
Being able to offer up business contracts for the data inputting work, usually to an offshore supplier, will see the firm receive the work for a much reduced cost. However, as already pointed out, low cost is not necessarily the most important thing. Using this method should enable the firm to work with a supplier they can rely on. This guaranteed quality brings peace of mind to a supplier and is a major reason why the work would be outsourced. The outsourcing firm may decide that they do not wish to send the work to a foreign country but there are still plenty of great opportunities to find an outsourcing supplier within your own country borders. This may result in a slightly higher cost but it may prevent any cultural differences occurring.
There are so many different methods of outsourcing that is inevitable that each firm will experience a need to use these services. For instance, payroll and HR systems may require a lot of data entry, perhaps relating to time-keeping, and this could be enhanced by utilizing a data-entry specialist. When it comes to employees, there is nothing more important than their wages so it makes perfect sense for a firm to keep their employees happy. Outsourcing this work may be invaluable if it guarantees that no hitches or slip-ups occur in the payroll process.
It is also very important for a firm to ensure that their customers are happy and nothing infuriates them more than having incorrect data stored about them. It can be very easy to make mistakes for non experienced data entry operators and this can lead to problems for any company. Therefore, utilizing the services of an outsourcing data entry operator should give a better chance of providing correct and up to date data. There is no such thing as guaranteed success when it comes to inputting but it is more likely that an outsourced data inputting professional will be successful, which brings its own benefits.
Outsourcing can be a health care provision solution
Whenever people are staying in hospital, it is obviously a very trying time and they have a lot to think about. The point of being in hospital is to hopefully become better and improve their health so it is important that everything that can make them better is taken care of. One of the most important things that a person needs to improve their health is food as they have to keep up their strength and energy. Receiving nutrients and vitamins is essential for anyone but even more so for those looking to recover from an illness and therefore, the supply of quality food is extremely important for any health care provider.
However, as there are many budgetary and financial restraints on a health care provider, the provision of food may be far down the list when it comes to priorities. It is fair to say that buying medicine and providing proper care is what will take the majority of providers’ budget so there are often cutbacks and restrictions placed upon the provision of meals. It can also be forgotten about in the greater scheme of things so a solution for the health care providers can come through the means of outsourcing.
The benefits of outsourcing have been well stated and have helped many companies and businesses reduce their costs without compromising the quality of their service. Therefore, the benefits felt by these firms are able to be experienced by health care providers and this is what is hoped for in India. India, as a nation, has greatly benefitted from outsourcing which has brought a lot of jobs to the country but it is still a bold move to take.
This is why India has turned to Mars Developers Suppliers who have agreed to provide lunch and dinner to all patients for Rs.20 a day. The main provision of the meals would see the patients receive rice, vegetables and dal every day with products like fish and eggs being made available on a weekly basis. It is vital that Mars Developers Suppliers are able to provide food that will aid the recovery process and ensuring that patients receive their recommended daily allowance is a key part of the agreement for this deal. There are obviously going to be individual patients who have special dietary requirements or will be unable to eat what the vast majority of people will be given so there is a need for flexibility from the food provider.
Allowing an external partner to take over the running of the food provision should enable the health care provider to focus on their core strengths whilst maintaining a quality of provision to the people who are in their care. It is fair to say that outsourcing is becoming a popular method of improving the services provided by a firm and more government departments and health care providers will turn to this solution. If the Indian experiment works well, expect to see many health care providers around the world continue in this manner with outsourcing playing a vital role in the provision of food in the health care business.
